the misty day story
In 2017 I decided to start making adaptogenic lattes for my husbands cafe. I was super surprised when they were a total hit, people were flocking in just to try them AND they were asking about where they could buy the powders to make them at home.
So, I designed my own wonky tragic labels on Canva, printed them on my home printer and Misty Day Plant Potions was born. About six months later my husband encouraged me to leave my job to pursue this fledgling business full time.
Man, it was terrifying. Starting your own business is not for the faint of heart. For the first year, I spent many days wondering if I should pack it in and get a job. Luckily I had a lovely supportive friends and family and a growing community and I stuck with it. I'm glad I did.
In 2018 I launched our range of mushroom extracts and introduced New Zealand to the magick of mushrooms. In 2020 I launched our best selling blend Magick Cocoa and the Magick Drinks range was born.
The ethos of Misty Day from the very start was to make herbs and mushrooms more approachable, more enjoyable and easier to add to your day.

Our commitment to the environment
Being green is pretty important to me. As a nature lover and mother and just an inhabitant on earth, I think its important to leave a light footprint.
Unfortunately owning a product business means that its difficult task. Every decision you make has consequences. Choose cheap plastic tubs and your profits increase but you have a hand in creating waste that persists forever. Choose non organic herbs and mushrooms and your profits increase but you have a hand in infecting the earth with chemicals.
Its a very hard path to tread to offset cost with conscience. For me, conscience always wins so I always choose organic herbs and mushrooms whenever possible ( I think we are at about 95%) and I chose to produce reusable metal tins to house my products which can be topped up using compostable refill pouches.
Its not a perfect option as the tins have a 1g BOPP bag inside to maintain the full shelf life of the powders inside. These can be recycled with soft plastics. I know its not ideal and I will keep searching for a better option. All of our larger pouches are compostable.
I ship all of our products in 100% biodegradable packaging.
I'm not a great capitalist. I will always choose conscience over profit. I will never be a millionaire but at least I can die knowing that I never chose profit over planet and people.
A little bit About Misty
You can definitely call me Misty, but my actual name is Rachel.
I am a qualified naturopath and herbalist and have worked in the natural health world for the last two decades.
I am passionate about herbs in all their forms and have a large medicinal herb garden at my west Auckland home with over 60 medicinal herb species.
I truly believe that herbs have intelligence and contribute more to us than just their chemical constituents. Oh yeah, I can be slightly woo woo at times.
I am an animal lover and have two dogs and two cats. Thus Misty Day donates to the SPCA every month. I am am avid reader, podcast aficionado, leftie greenie, travel and gym junkie and trivia queen.
Misty Day is my baby and my dream come true. I still do the majority of the business stuff myself and as a bit of a control freak ( personality type - The Commander), I like it that way.
I don't have much more to say except for I rarely look like this, rather I look like a dishevilled middle aged woman in stretchy pants. And thats okay with me.

Many of our powders are extremely hydroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the environment and can become hard over time.
This is the reason why we house the powders in moisture resistant bags within our tins. This is to maintain the extended shelf life. When you receive your tin, feel free to pour your powder into the tin.
The best way to care for your powders is to ensure they are stored in a cool dry place, ( in the fridge is great) and most importantly try to use within 60 days of opening.
Its also a good idea to give your potions a wee stir with a dry spoon every time you use them, to help reduce the risk of going hard.
Every person is an individual and thus results may vary. I think the best option is to use your whole jar and see how you feel. If you like it, thats awesome. If you don't then flick me an email and let me know all about it.
Our ingredients are organically cultivated or wildcrafted to organic specifications and are sourced from all over the world.
Our mushrooms are mostly cultivated in China, where they have a long history of cultivation and processing of functional mushrooms.
The processing of mushroom extracts is very important to allow the body to access the phytonutrients inside.
Mushrooms contain phytonutrients which are both water soluble and lipid soluble.
Thus in order to extract the maximum action from the mushroom the process of extraction involves both a water phase and an alcohol phase. This is called dual extraction.
Then the extract is spray dried and powdered. There is no alcohol left in the finished extract.
This is an extract ratio. It basically means that for every one kilo of powder, 10 kilos of raw ingredient has gone into making it.
Our products do not include any gluten containing ingredients. However, in New Zealand, in order to state gluten free, each product has to be tested. We have not tested our products for gluten so do not state gluten free on our packaging.
Yes - all of our powders are vegan.
None of our products contain any added sugar. In my humble opinion, there is enough sugar in grocery items and the inclusion of sugar into a "health product" is ridiculous! This means that when you buy misty day products you are not paying for sugar - only the herbs and mushrooms listed. This also means that our serving sizes are smaller and you get more servings per purchase!
Depends what you mean by magic! All of our functional mushrooms offer lots of benefits but they are not psychoactive!
We will ship either the day of or the following day after ordering. Our courier offers an overnight service for the north island and two day service for south island.
